  • Description

A major exhibition of British arms and military equipment has opened at Aldershot in Hampshire. Aimed mostly at foreign buyers, the exhibition attracted a good turnout on preview-day.

SYNOPSIS: Reputed to be the biggest exhibition of its size over staged, the Aldershot display features virtually every type of military device, from small convenience items to tanks and mobile anti-aircraft guns.

Among the many overseas visitors were officers from Malaysia, Brunei and Jordan. They paid particular attention to British-built versatility vehicles, and the lighter mounted weapons. Although the emphasis is on weaponry and offensive military equipment, the exhibition also has several displays of defensive hardware, including dozens of varieties of barbed-wire fencing designs, and other deterrents. One item which attracted a lot of attention was a radio-controlled model aircraft, used in anti-aircraft training programmes. The manufacturers say they have sold many of these to clients who have wanted them purely to play with.

The organisers of the exhibition have invited military experts from 70 countries to Aldershot for the occasion, and early reports indicated that most had turned up. Military officers from China have come to Britain for the occasion... Peking's first-ever military delegation to come to England. It's expected that many of the visitors will visit the manufacturing firms after the five-day exhibition has ended, to negotiate purchasing deals.

During the later part of the exhibition, visitors will be able to see Britain's Hawker Harrier Jump-jet in action... China is one of several countries interested in this vertical take-off fighter. At last year's military exhibition, Britain sold equipment valued at 700-million Pounds (1,281-million U.S. Dollars).
