Background: Thousands of people gathered at the Lisbon University to celebrate the independence of Mozambique on Wednesday (25 June).
The celebrations, attended by Admiral Rosa Coutinho, a member of the Supreme Revolutionary Council, were organised by the Mozambique-Portugal Friendship Associations.
The participants sang revolutionary songs -- including the "anthem" which heralded the Portuguese Revolution last year when the present government overthrew the Caetano regime.
Meanwhile, a top-level Portuguese delegation led by Prime Minister General Vasco Goncalves was in the capital of Mozambique, Can Phumo, formerly Lourenco Marques, for the independence celebrations. But they left out the United States. Britain, West Germany, France, South Africa and Rhodesia.
