Background: Battered Quemoy, short of medicine and food, in the face of continuous shelling from the Communist Chinese mainland, received supplies from U.S. military transport planes at the weekend.

Last week two small convoys, supported by U.S. naval forces, succeeded in breaking through the barrage to bring some relief to the island but observers reported the beachheads were virtually untenable.

The presence of U.S. warships provoked further warnings from the Chinese Communist Foreign Ministry. "This is the ninth serious warning against the intrusion of the American warships."
