  • Description

STANLEYVILLE TODAY IS ALMOST A DESERTED CITY. JOURNALISTS NEED SPECIAL PERMITS TO ENTER THE TOWN AND EVEN THEN THEY FACE DIFFICULTIES. TWO DAYS AGO OUR CAMERAMAN MANAGED TO FLY INTO STANLEYVILLE FROM LEOPOLDVILLE FOR A FEW HOURS AND THESE ARE THE PICTURES HE BROUGHT BACK.

THE HOTELS, ONCE THE HOME OF EUROPEANS EMPLOYED IN THE CONGO, ARE DESERTED. THE SHOPS HAVE BEEN LOOTED -- THE SMASHED WINDOWS LITTER THE PAVEMENT AND GLASS AND RUBBLE IS STREWN OVER THE STREETS.

SOLDIERS OF PRIME MINISTER TSHOMBE'S NATIONAL CONGOLESE ARMY PATROL THE STREETS, BUT THERE IS LITTLE ACTIVITY. "IT'S LIKE A GHOST TOWN," OUR CAMERAMAN REPORTED.

HE SAW MANY CONGOLESE WEARING WHITE BANDAGES AROUND THEIR HEADS. AT FIRST HE ASSUMED THEY'D BEEN WOUNDED BUT LATER DISCOVERED THAT THEY WORE THE BANDAGES TO SHOW THAT THEY WERE NOT REBELS.

BECAUSE OF THE EVENTS OF THE PAST FEW WEEKS THERE IS NO FOOD IN THE CITY. RELIEF SUPPLIES HAVE BEEN FLOWN INTO THE TOWN AND FOOD, CONSISTING LARGELY OF BEANS AND A TYPE OF FLOUR, IS BEING DISTRIBUTED DAILY IN THE CITY. QUARE AT THE SITE OF THE LUMUMBA MONUMENT, NOW IN RUINS.

THERE IS ALSO ACTIVITY AT THE HOSPITAL. FOUR BELGIAN DOCTORS FROM LEOPOLDVILLE ARE DOING WHAT THEY CAN FOR THE VICTIMS OF THE FIGHTING. EVERYDAY NEW PATIENTS ARE BROUGHT IN, SOME HAVE BEEN WOUNDED VERY BADLY.

AMONG THE PATIENTS WHO OUR CAMERAMAN SAW WAS A WOMAN WHO HAD HER LEG AMPUTATED AFTER IT HAD BEEN HIT BY A BURST OF MACHINE GUN FIRE. ANOTHER MAN HAD BOTH HANDS BADLY DAMAGED BY A HAND-GRENADE. TWO FINGERS WERE MISSING FROM ONE HAND AND HE COULD HARDLY MOVE HIS FINGERS. ONE YOUNG CONGOLESE HAD LOST AN ARM. IT WAS AMPUTATED AFTER GANGRENE HAD SET INTO A WOUND.

VISITING THE STANLEYVILLE PRISON, OUR CAMERAMAN SAW MANY REBELS. SOME HAD BEEN CAPTURED AND OTHERS HAD SURRENDERED. A FEW HAD THE DISTINGUISHING SCAR OF THE REBELS ON THEIR FOREHEAD -- THIS MARK WAS SAID TO BE PART OF A CRUDE INITIATION CEREMONY.

SOME REPORTS SAY THAT MORE THAN 1,000 INSURGENTS HAVE SURRENDERED TO THE CONGOLESE ARMY AUTHORITIES IN STANLEYVILLE FOLLOWING A LEAFLET DROP ON THE LEFT BANK OF THE CONGO RIVER. THEIR FATE IS STILL TO BE DECIDED BY SPECIAL "MILITARY TRIBUNALS."
NORTH OF STANLEYVILLE THE BATTLE GOES ON.....
