  • Description

A cluster of shanty town houses and a hotel suite designed for South Vietnam's former President were severely damaged by communist rocket attacks on Sunday (27 April).

At least six people were killed and 22 injured in the attack.

About six 122-mm rockets were fired into the city centre in the early hours of the morning, in the first attack of its kind on the capital for several years.

In one densely-populated poor quarter, a single rocket killed three people and wounded another 14.

Survivors stumbled through the smouldering rubble of at least two dozen checks whose thin walls and tin roofs were destroyed by the blast and subsequent fires.

Just over a mile (2 kilometres) away, in the plusher part of Saigon's riverfront, another rocket severely damaged a newly-completed suite designed especially for the former President, Nguyen Van Thieu.

The rocket tore through the roof of the hotel and into the suite which had never been occupied. A security guard was killed.
