TRANSCRIPT: (SEQ. 7): MISS CULVER: "I was working in the forward cabin greeting the passengers aboard the flight, and he did not have a boarding pass. And so I referred him back to the agent, you know, which is the normal procedure. And at tat time, immediately, he grabbed me around the neck with the gun and he threatened me an immediately of course the passengers started deplaning. And at this time he dragged me back, I would say like to the middle of the aircraft, where the galleys are. And at this time the young man was shot -- a passenger who had apparently made some approach to him you know."

QUESTION: "You saw him shoot this passenger?"

    MISS CULVER: "Yes, I did."

(SEQ. 8): ZITO: "I had climbed through the cockpit window and I put this jacket on. I was told that a man was dead, was shot. So they needed a small man, and here I was, so I climbed through the cockpit window, and I sat in a jump seat. I assured the captain I would go along with anything he said."

QUESTION: "What made you decide that it was actually a safe time to go after him?"

ZITO: "He was well past the girl, very well past the girl. And he was in an emotional state where I knew that he had to turn around in order to shoot at me, I could open the door and take a good two clean shots at him before he could get a good shot at me. And that's when I lay on the floor. And, by the way, this was my first flight and I was very scared."

Background: A young negro gunman hijacked a Boeing 727 from Chicago to New York yesterday (Saturday) and shot dead a passenger. It was the first hijack death in the United States. The hijacker, named by police as 23-year-old Gregory White, was wounded and captured after the jetliner had touched down at New York's Kennedy Airport."
The drama started even before the aircraft had taken off, when the gunman grabbed air stewardess Katherine Culver. Later she told her own story to newsmen:
At the same time Deputy Marshal Joseph Zito climbed aboard the airliner through a cockpit wearing an airline uniform. He described the mid-air gun battle:
For the rest of the flight, the hijacker stayed under cover behind a seat. He was wounded, captured and carried off to hospital in a serious condition during an exchange of fire with F.B.I. agents at Kennedy airport.

There is a full National Broadcasting Company commentary with this film, which is transcribed on our own commentary page.

SYNOPSIS: In the United States, a new hijacking drama on Saturday led to the death of a passenger -- the first in America -- and the capture of the wounded negro hijacker:
Twenty-three-year-old Gregory White of Chicago was wounded and captured today in New York after hijacking a T.W.A. jetliner in Chicago last night. He had shot to death an elderly male passenger and exchanged fore in mid-air with members of the crew and with a U.S. Deputy Marshal on the way to New York. At Kennedy Airport, law officers waited as the plane approached, with White holding Katherine Culver, a stewardess, as hostage. The hijacker permitted the body of the dead man to be removed in Chicago. In New York, the Deputy Marshal, the pilot and Miss Culver told what happened:
The shots fired in mid-air his no-one, but Miss Culver broke free in the exchange. White was shot by and F.B.I. man in the arm on landing at Kennedy. He was taken to hospital and then held on assault. In Chicago, he faces charges of homicide and air piracy.
