Background: A delegation from China's People's National Assembly is currently visiting Latin America. Last week the group arrived in Caracas, on the first leg of their tour.
SYNOPSIS: As the plane carrying the Chinese delegation arrived at Caracas airport Venezuelan government officials were waiting on the tarmac to greet the visitors. The welcoming party was led by the President of the Venezuelan National Congress, Dr. Gonzalo Barrios, who was the first to greet the leader of the Chinese party, Permanent Committee Vice-President Chi Peng-fei, who was accompanied by his wife.
On his arrival Mr. Chi said "We are the first delegation of the People's National Assembly of China to visit Latin America. We hope to be able to have friendly talks and wide contact with the leaders and the people of Venezuela."
One of the Chinese delegation's first engagements was a visit to the tomb of Simon Bolivar -- the national hero who led the liberation of most of South America from Spain.
The Chinese party will move on to other Latin American countries after spending one week in Venezuela. The group includes two members of the Permanent Committee, four deputies, members of various workers' groups, journalists and interpreters. During their stay in Venezuela they are visiting the oil-producing centre of Maracaibo.
