INTRODUCTION: HOW WELL WILL THE WORLD'S LARGEST AIRPLANE PERFORM IN THE ARCTIC ... AND IN THE TROPICS? TO GET THE ANSWERS TO THESE QUESTIONS BEFORE THE U.S. AIR FORCE BEGINS FLYING THE C-5
GALAXY IN SUCH CLIMATES, THE AIR FORCE AND LOCKHEED-GEORGIA COMPANY PLACED A C-5 AIRCRAFT
IN THE CLIMATIC HANGAR AT EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, FLORIDA, AND DROPPED THE TEMPERATURE TO MINUS 65 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT ... AND OPERATED THE GIGANTIC AIRCRAFT'S SYSTEMS AND SUBSYSTEMS UNDER WEATHER CONDITIONS SUCH AS THOSE WHICH PREVAIL IN THE ARCTIC. THE C-5'S VISOR NOSE WAS RAISED .. PROVIDING AN OPENING TO RECEIVE MASSIVE CARGO WHEN THE GALAXY GOES INTO OPERATION NEXT YEAR. THE LANDING GEAR WAS EXERCISED ... ALL 28 WHEELS, WHICH WILL SPREAD THE HEAVY WEIGHT OF THE AIRCRAFT AND PERMIT IT TO LAND ON UNPAVED SURFACES. INCIDENTALLY, THE C-5 HAS A GROSS TAKEOFF WEIGHT OF 728,000 POUNDS.

THE POWERFUL GENERAL ELECTRIC FANJET ENGINES, EACH PRODUCING 41,100 POUNDS THRUST, WERE RUN UP DURING ARCTIC TESTING. THEN THE TEMPERATURE OF THE CLIMATIC HANGAR WAS RAISED TO A SOARING 125 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT TO TEST THE GALAXY'S OPERATIONS UNDER WEATHER CONDITIONS SIMULATING THOSE OF THE TROPICS. NEXT YEAR, THIS C-5 WILL MAKE ACTUAL TEST FLIGHTS INTO THE ARCTIC AND TROPICS. MEANWHILE, OTHER C-5 AIRCRAFT ARE UNDERGOING INTENSIVE FLIGHT TESTING ... A TOTAL OF EIGHT SOON WILL BE FLYING. AT EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, CALIFORNIA, A C-5 TOOK OFF IN A TEST PROGRAM TO TRY OUT ITS CAPABILITY FOR INFLIGHT REFUELING. THE AIRCRAFT CAN FLY ANY OCEAN NON-STOP, WITHOUT RECEIVING ADDITIONAL FUEL. BUT THE ABILITY TO RECEIVE FUEL FROM A TANKER PLANE WILL PERMIT THE GALAXY TO REMAIN ALOFT EVEN LONGER. WITH AIR FORCE AND LOCKHEED CREWS MANNING A TANKER PLANE AND A C-5, CONTACT WAS MADE, AND 100,000 POUNDS OF FUEL WAS TRANSFERRED TO THE GALAXY. LATER, THIS WAS REPEATED DURING A NIGHT FLIGHT. NORMALLY, THE C-5 WON'T USE INFLIGHT REFUELING ... THIS IS JUST AN ADDED CAPABILITY. THE C-5 IS BEING DEVELOPED UNDER DIRECTION OF THE AIR FORCE SYSTEMS COMMAND FOR USE BY THE MILITARY AIRLIFT COMMAND.
