    Background: A TWO-MONTH "COME BACK HOME" CAMPAIGN, IN WHICH THE SOUTH VIETNAM GOVERNMENT DROPPED 170 MILLION LEAFLETS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY, HAS BROUGHT 3,462 VIET CONG FIGHTERS FROM THEIR JUNGLE HIDE-OUTS.

    THE LEAFLETS APPEALED TO THE VIET CONG T ABANDON THEIR WEAPONS AND RETURN TO THEIR VILLAGES. THEY WERE DROPPED TO COINCIDE WITH THE CHRISTMAS AND LUNAR NEW YEAR HOLIDAYS.

    IN THE THREE MONTHS SINCE THEN, SOME VIET CONG HAVE BEEN VOLUNTARILY SURRENDERING, AND MANY OF THEM HAVE BROUGHT THEIR WEAPONS WITH THEM. AT A SAIGON PRESS CONFERENCE, A GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL SHOWED SOME OF THE 246 GUNS AND MINES AND GRENADES THAT HAVE BEEN TURNED IN.

    SOME OF THE MEN WHO HAD SURRENDERED WERE ALSO AT THE PRESS CONFERENCE. A SPOKESMAN SAID THAT AMONG THE THREE THOUSAND WERE 32 NORTH VIETNAMESE INFILTRATORS, AND SOME CAMBODIAN BORN VIETNAMESE.
