Background: Leaders of the military government in Greece attended the ancient Blessing of the Waters ceremony at Piraeus harbour today (Sunday, January 6). President Phaedon Gizikis, who led the government presence, was making only his second public appearance since being sworn in as head of state in November.
Prime Minister Adamantios Androutsopoulos and members of his cabinet watched as the Bishop of Piraeus, Mgr. Chrissosotomos, blessed the waters and interceded for the safety of all Greek seamen.
For the ceremony, the golden Holy Cross is brought down to the guayside from the Saint Trinity Church of Piraeus and is thrown a traditional three times in the waters of the harbour.
