    The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Michael Ramsey, said in Capetown yesterday (Friday) that he did not support the sale of arms to South Africa because it would be interpreted in many African countries as a gesture of support for South Africa.

    He was speaking at the start of a three week tour of South Africa made controversial by church involvement in support for African guerrilla movements and the proposed resumption of British arms sales to South Africa.

    During his stay in South Africa Dr Ramsey has said he will be making a close study of the role of the Anglican church in bringing about racial harmony. On the question of Arms sales, Dr Ramsey said:
