  • Description

A government offensive to re-open Highway One, Phnom Penh's route to saigon, continued on Saturday (16 March) with an attack by armoured troops on the rebel positions.

In this, the tenth day of the offensive, the government attack failed again to break the rebel hold on the road. After initial successes, the troops were bogged down by heavy artillery and mortar fire.

For many miles, the highway runs parallel to the Mekong River, the capital's only lifeline to the outside world. A similar attack along Highway Four - the route to the deep-water port of Kompong Som - was mounted on 11 March. It too failed to break the rebel encirclement.

On the same day as the Highway One attack, rebel Khmer Rouge units occupied an island in the Mekong River five miles north-east of Phnom Penh. Two days later, the former capital of Cambodia, Oudong, which had been surrounded since December, was penetrated by Khmer Rouge units and heavy fighting was reported in the centre of the city.
