After five years service in the Da Nang area of Vietnam the U.S. Seventh Marine?

  • Description

After five years service in the Da Nang area of Vietnam the U.S. Seventh Marine Engineer Battalion has completed its tour of duty and is returning home. Its return falls within the troop reduction programme introduced by President Nixon, designed to end American troop involvement in the war.

After the war had been taken into Cambodian territory President Nixon announced a stepped up with-drawal programme from Vietnam. In April this year he announced a further reduction of 150,000 troops, bringing the total number of American troops in Vietnam by april 1971 down to 275,000.

The withdrawals are part of President Nixon's overall Vietnamisation programme. As part of the attempt to leave situation which the Vietnamese can take over themselves, the Seventh Marine Engineers leave intact the many buildings they erected during their stay.

When the engineers arrived there was a lack of many of the basic facilities in the Da Nang area- schools, hospitals, roads and bridges. Now many of these have been provided, and are in use.
