Background: In Spain, five gunmen shot and seriously wounded a senior Spanish Army officer on Thursday (15 November) as he left his house in the Basque city of San Sebastian.
SYNOPSIS: Lieutenant Colonel Tomas Lopez De Diego was hit in the chest and arms as he stepped out of his house on his way to work. Bullets riddled his car and house in the attack by five hooded men.
The gunmen fled from the scene in a stolen car, leaving the bleeding colonel slumped on the ground. An ambulance took the wounded officer to hospital, where he underwent an emergency operation. His condition was described as very serious. Cartridge cases found at the scene were similar to those used by the ETA, the Basque Separatist organisation.
Colonel Lopez is an infantry officer with an administrative job. So far this year, twelve military men have been murdered in Spain. The last officer killed by the ETA was a military governor walking on a San Sebastian promenade.
