  • Description

THE PEOPLE OF THE GA MASHIE AREA, IN GHANA, CELEBRATED THEIR ANNUAL HOMOWO FESTIVAL IN ACCRA, RECENTLY. THE FESTIVAL IS FAMOUS AS AN OCCASION OF FEASTING AND MERRY-MAKING.

THE FESTIVAL IS BELIEVED TO HAVE ORIGINATED SEVERAL HUNDRED YEARS AGO. A SEVERE FAMINE HAD STRUCK THE GA PEOPLE, BUT IT WAS FOLLOWED ALMOST IMMEDIATELY BY A SEASON OF RICH HARVESTS. HOMOWO LITERALLY MEANS HOOTING AWAY HUNGER.

THE FESTIVAL EXTENDS OVER ONE DAY, AND PREPARATIONS START EARLY IN THE MORNING. MEMBERS OF THE FAMILY CO-OPERATE IN PREPARING A TRADITIONAL MEAL OF PALM SOUP AND KPOKPOI, A DISH PREPARED FROM CORN DOUGH.

WHEN THE FOOD IS READY CHIEFS LAUNCH FESTIVITIES BY CALLING DOWN THE MEMORY OF ANCESTORS. IN ACCRA, CELEBRANTS PARADE IN PROCESSION TO USSHER FORT PRISONS, WHERE IT IS BELIEVED SOME ANCESTORS WERE BURIED.

THE CHIEF WALKS AHEAD, SPRINKLING FOOD TO SYMBOLISE THE RETURN OF PLENTY. DRUMMERS AND DANCERS ACCOMPANY THE PROCESSION.

ACCORDING TO TRADITION ALL QUARRELS AND MISUNDERSTANDINGS ARE FORGOTTEN DURING THE FEASTING.
