    Background: BEIRUT, LEBANON

Lebanon is investigating the possibility of troops from Britain, Portugal, Colombia and Brazil joining the present U.S., French and Italian peace-keeping force in Beirut. President Amin Gemayal says he wants the present 4,000 strong force to be expanded to 30,000, and moved into areas outside Beirut to help Lebanese troops restore government control in the region. French defence minister Charles Hernu, who arrived in Beirut in the night of December 2nd, met the following day with Lebanese defence minister Issam Khoury and army commander Victor Khoury. French officials said he had not given the Lebanese army any final decision on whether to increase its contingents, as the matter was still being studied in Paris.
