  • Description

A top official of the Palestine Liberation Organisation, Mr. Abou Ayad, arrived in Algiers on Saturday (17 December) to discuss with Algerian leaders opposition to the peace talks being held in Cairo. Algeria, along with Libyan Jamhiriyah, South Yemen and Syria is a member of the "Rejection Front". This was formed in response to President Sadat's visit to Israel and the subsequent peace conference he called to find a negotiated solution to the Middle East problem.

SYNOPSIS: On arrival at Algiers' airport, Mr. Abou Ayad was met by Mr. Malaika Djelloud, and member of Algeria's National Assembly, and Mr. Abu Hassan who beads the Palestinian Liberation Organisation's office in Algiers. Also present were other Palestinians who now live in Algeria.

Mr. Ayad, who is second only to the leader of the PLO, Yasser Arafat, completed welcoming formalities on the tarmac before proceeding to the airport's VIP lounge to meet newsmen. Sitting with his Algerian hosts, he reaffirmed PLO opposition to President Sadat's peace initiatives.

Mr. Ayad described the steps taken by the Egyptian leader as "a surrender. He said they were designed to wipe out the Arab Liberation movement. But he said the Palestinian Resistance would not allow this to happen. And that was why he was in Algiers to discuss with Algerian leaders, ways of opposing the Cairo talks.

Before he left, Mr. Ayad also condemned the United States President, Mr. Carter. On Thursday (15 December) Mr. Carter criticised the Plo for not supporting the Cairo peace conference. But Mr. Ayad said that showed the PLO was on the right track because the United States was the ally of Zionism.
