  • Description

In the northern sector of the West Bank, four guerrillas, believed to be Palestinians, attacked an Israeli settlement in the early hours of Monday morning (12 June). Settlers in Mehula, near the town of Beat Shean, fired on the intruders and one guerrilla was shot dead.

SYNOPSIS: Mehula, lying only 800 metres (875 yards) from the Jordanian border, was one of the first Israeli settlements to be established on the West Bank following the 1967 Arab-Israeli war. General Moshe Levy, the officer commanding the area said that the guerrillas crossed the border, entered the settlement and hammered on the door of a house. The attackers started shooting, but the owner returned the fire. Killing one of the guerrillas and wounding another.

The remaining guerrillas fled into Jordan. Settlers in the area are continually on the alert. It used to be a frequent target for terrorist border raids until Jordan expelled Palestinian guerrillas in 1970. In Jerusalem, Israeli Interior Minister Yosef Burg commented on the attack, the first in the area for four years
