Background: Following the raid by South African forces on a SWAPO guerrilla camp inside Angola, there is evidence now which suggests that a large number of civilians, including women and children, were among the casualties. The South Africans penetrated more than 150 miles into Angolan territory, earlier this month (4 May) across the border with South West Africa ??? (Namibia).

SYNOPSIS: A Swedish camera team filmed what was left of a camp at Cassinga, which was used by SWAPO guerrillas from Namibia. They were shown a mass grave, where it was said, some of the victims of the raid had been buried. The Swedes said they had heard of one grave containing 122 bodies, and filmed another with over 460 men, women and children. An Angolan official said victims at Cassinga were shot in the head at close range after being tear gassed. The attack, which South Africa says was aimed at military targets, has caused the United Nations peace talks on Namibia to be suspended.

The Angolans say nearly 250 people were injured in the attack on Cassinga, and nearly 700 killed. They say another hundred were killed and dozens more injured in a simultaneous attack on another camp, at Chetequela.

The Angolan Defence Minister has appealed for massive aid for the Namibians, who he said were facing. South African threats inside their own country and in refugee camps inside Angola.
