    ISRAEL HAS GRANTED POLITICAL ASYLUM TO AN EGYPTIAN AIR FORCE PILOT, WHO FLEW HIS PLANE TO ISRAEL YESTERDAY, (SUNDAY). THE PILOT, 26 YEAR OLD CAPTAIN MAHMOUD HILMI, HIS CZECH-BUILT YAK II TRAINER AT AN AIR FORCE BASE "SOMEWHERE IN ISRAEL" AFTER AN 80-MINUTE FLIGHT ACROSS THE SINAI PENINSULAR FROM HIS OWN STATION AT BILBEIS, ON THE NILE DELTA.

    CAPTAIN HILMI, WHO SAID HE WAS CAIRO-BORN ANN A BACHELOR, STATED THAT HE FLED EGYPT FOR POLITICAL REASONS AND HAD COME TO HIS DECISION SEVERAL WEEKS AGO. HOWEVER, HE REFUSED TO ENLARGE ON HIS REASONS FOR LEAVING.

    WHILE FLYING TOWARDS ISRAEL, CAPTAIN HILMI SAID HIS PLANE HAD BEEN SPOTTED BY TWO MIG 17 'S ON A TRAINING FLIGHT OVER SINAI. HE ADDED THAT THEY DID NOT TRY TO INTERCEPT HIM BUT ATTEMPTED TO GUIDE HIM BACK AS HE FLEW ON.

    THE ISRAEL AIR FORCE, ANNOUNCING THE DEFECTION OF CAPTAIN HILMI, SAID THAT IT HAD LAUNCHED FIGHTERS OF ITS OWN TO PURSUE THE EGYPTIAN AIRCRAFT CHASING THE FUGITIVE PLANE.

    THE EGYPTIAN PILOT IS THE FIRST EGYPTIAN TO SEEK ASYLUM IN ISRAEL SINCE THE SINAI CAMPAIGN OF 1956.
