SYNOPSIS: Thousands of people turned out for the state funeral of the late Bishop Abel Balya on Monday (3 December). The 102-year old Bishop entered the church in 1903 and finally retired in 1960 after 57 years service.

President Godfrey Binaisa joined the congregation in paying his respects to Bishop Balya who had devoted so much of his life to the unification of Africa. In addition to his community work the late Bishop established a theological college at Bukuku on Fort Portal and assisted the late Reverend Kamuhigi in translation of the Bible into Rucooro language in 1911.

President Binaisa interrupted a tour of Western Uganda to attend the funeral. The President is himself currently striving hard to smooth over tribal differences and to re-unite Uganda following the late President Amin's divisive rule. The Church could once again have an important part to play in this vital work.
