  • Description

Haj Amin El-Husseini, Chairman of the Higher arab Committee for Palestine, held a news conference Mar 4 in Beirut, Lebanon, to answer Zionist allegations that he was connected with Adolf Eichmann, and the measures taken by the Nazis against Jews in Europe. (The trial of Eichmann, accused for murdering six million Jews during World War two, begins in Israel on April 11).

The allegations, he said, were false. "The Zionists consider me personally and the Palestine National Arab movement as their arch-enemy. They have been trying since 1920 to circulate all sorts of false accusations against me and other Arab Nationalist leaders because we have always opposed Zionist aspirations and aggressive schemes. They published various books and pamphlets containing various false accusations against me, in order to mislead world public opinion about the real issue in the Palestine problem."
He said he took refuge in Germany during World War Two because the British Government attempted to capture him in 1937. This was the "only course " open to him as (he said) Britain put pressure on various Middle-East countries to prevent him from remaining there. Britain had pursued him through Lebanon, Iraq, Iran and Turkey.

The Nazis, he said, needed no persuasion or instigation either by him or anyone else to execute their programme against the Jews. He went to Germany in 1941 "after the Nazis had already taken all measures against the Jews". He had never met Eichmann.
