  • Description

A strained peace came to Cairo university campus on Friday (16 February), the Moslem day of rest and worship, after five days of clashes between students and riot police that had brought repercussions in the Egyptian Parliament.

Following a meeting of a fact-finding committee into the unrest, there were indications that the Government might be ready to make some concessions to the students in their campaign for the release of 100 arrested demonstrators.

The committee, which comprised members of the People's Assembly and university teaching faculties, was presided over by the Parliamentary Speaker, Mr. Hafez Badawi.

Others present included Dr. Ahmed Loutfi, Professor of Medicine at Cairo University, Mr. Ahmed Moursy, a professor at the faculty of art, and university officials Ali El Moufti and R Imam.

After the meeting, Members of Parliament and professors both urged a speedy completion of investigations into cases of students who have been arrested on anti-State charges and the immediate release of those found innocent.

The professors said they rejected the demonstrations as a means of expressing opinion and urged the students to take part in discussions over their demands.
