  • Description

A few laps around the course to familiarise themselves and loosen up the muscles.

Then a chance to meet some of the spectators who had come to see them in action.

Competitors in the North Cairns crocodile race had come from the Queensland Fauna reserves at Green Island, Koombal Park, and Hartley's Creek. Two of the more highly-strung runners, Daisy and Cassidy, arrived by taxi. They were entered by Mr. and Mrs. Alan Lawson. Cassidy, the only three-legged competitor, was none the less a firm favourite.

All the usual precautions were taken, although it wasn't certain who was being safeguarded - the runners or the spectators.

Twins - the smallest runners - were entered by Nila Vlasoff, aged nine, and her mother.

Race time was drawing nearer, and excitement was growing on the tennis court which served as a track for what's believed to be Australia's first crocodile race. The runners had been muzzled with string, so personal differences couldn't interfere with the serious business of the race.

There were nine entrants in all, ranging in size from 15-inches to six feet. The North Cairns race was a curtain-raiser for a later crocodile championship, to be held at the Cairns Fun-in-the-Sun festival next month.

The flag drops, and they're away! Well - some are......
Stage-fright, and a poor sense of direction spoiled some promising beginnings.

Thundering towards the line, about five runners were determined to make it a close finish. The early leader collapsed exhausted three inches short of victory, while the following bunch made their sprint from behind. Daisy, streaking home was pipped at the post by a tiny blur - one of the twins. She took her defeat well - with hardly a hint of crocodile tears.
