  • Description

A PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION INTO THE LAKONIA FIRE HAS BEGUN IN ATHENS. LAST NIGHT (SATURDAY) CAPTAIN MATHEOS ZARBIS, MASTER OF THE ILL-FATED LINER, WAS QUESTIONED BY A NAVAL OFFICER HEADING THE INQUIRY. THE INVESTIGATION IS BEING HELD IN STRICT SECRECY.

CAPTAIN ZARBIS FLEW INTO ATHENS FROM MADRID EARLY YESTERDAY MORNING (SATURDAY). ACCOMPANIED BY SEVEN OF HIS CREW, HE WAS MET BY HIS WIFE AND A REPRESENTATIVE OF THE GREEK LINE, OWNERS OF THE LAKONIA.

LOOKING TIRED AND WITH TEARS IN HIS EYES, HE TOLD REPORTERS: "WHATEVER MAY HAVE BEEN SAID, THE GREEK MEMBERS OF THE CREW HAVE DONE A WONDERFUL JOB. IT IS THANKS TO THIS WORK THAT ALMOST ALL OF THE PASSENGERS OF THE SHIP WERE SAVED."
MEANWHILE, MORE SURVIVORS RETURNED TO LONDON TODAY. A TOTAL OF 124 PASSENGERS AND 141 CREW OF THE CRUISE LINER DOCKED AT TILBURY IN THE ARKADIA, THE LAKONIA'S SISTER SHIP.

THERE WERE TUMULTUOUS AND EMOTIONAL SCENES OF WELCOME FROM A CROWD OF 1,000 RELATIVES ON THE WHARF WHO HAD WAITED ANXIOUSLY AS THE ARKADIA NOSED UP THE THAMES ESTUARY THROUGH THICK FOG. SOME HAD BEEN THERE SEVERAL HOURS.

WHEN THE SURVIVORS CAME ASHORE, MANY RELATIVES RUSHED FORWARD TO KISS AND HUG THEM. THERE WERE OLD PEOPLE AND YOUNG PEOPLE -- ALL GLAD TO BE HOME.

AND WITH THEM THEY BROUGHT MORE BITTER CHARGES AGAINST THE LAKONIA CREW. ONE MAN SUMMED UP THE PASSENGER'S FEELING: "....MOST OF US WERE OBVIOUSLY DISSATISFIED WITH THE ORGANISATION ABOARD." BUT FROM A MEMBER OF THE CREW CAME THIS COMMENT: "THERE WAS NO PANIC IN THE SHIP."
