  • Description

More than a week after the crash of an American C-5 Galaxy aircraft near Saigon, scavengers are still stripping the wreckage, interfering with an inquiry into the cause of the disaster. More than 170 Vietnamese orphans and medical officers died when the plane crashed into a field and exploded soon after take-off for the United States.

Whole families have been combing the wreckage, taking away anything of value. South Vietnamese soldiers, who kept the crowds away for the first few days after crash, apparently have relaxed their guard. Some are even joining the scavengers, searching for electrical equipment.

The huge hull fragmented on impact and wreckage was scattered for hundreds of yards. Officials say many vital pieces of evidence could have disappeared into the rucksacks of the family scavenging teams.
