Background: Opposition has arisen within West Germany to Chancellor Willy Brandt's diplomatic dealings with the Communist bloc.

At a ceremony in West Berlin this part weekend, Brandt was made an "honoured citizen" of the city, an honour reserved to very few.

Opposing political groups, however, boycotted the affair, protesting Brandt's signing of a peace treaty with Poland last week and other diplomatic attempts to normalize relations with former enemy nations within the Communist bloc.

In Born, a new Far Right group called The Resistance (resistance against Brandt's treaty) clashed with Far left Student groups which support him.

Brandt has held meetings this past year with the leaders of East
Germany, Poland and Russia in attempts to establish normal diplomatic relations with these countries.
