Background: The railway drivers' go-slow which began at midnight on Sunday (April 4), has caused chaos in Britain's rail services - and today (Wednesday) there is a threat of even worse to come as the National Union of Railwaymen (NUR) has announced that they would take militant action unless management improved their pay offer.

The NUR is the largest rail union, with 190,000 members including guards and signalmen, and such action by them would certainly bring on greater numbers of delays and cancellations - even affecting the early Easter traffic.

The go-slow and the threatened extended action came after both sides dead-locked over union demands for increases of up to 25%. An attempt to halt the mounting disruption will be made today when rail chiefs and Union leaders meet again in London.
