Background: A new telecommunications centre is in operation in Kuwait.

It was opened on Monday (28 February) by the Amir of Kuwait, Shaikh Sabah As Salem As Sabah.

The new centre is expected to greatly improve Kuwait's internal communications and its links with the outside world, already boosted by the opening of an earth satellite receiving station late in 1969.

SYNOPSIS: Kuwait--and the opening of a new telecommunications centre--complete with a training institute.

Arriving to officially open the new centre on Monday--the Amir of Kuwait, Shaikh Sabah As Salem As Sabah. He was to tell official guests at the ceremony that the new centre was in keeping with the progress being made in all fields by the people of Kuwait.

Officials heard Kuwait's Minister of Posts, Telegraph and Telephones say that the new centre marked the putting into effect of an important stage in the development of telecommunication systems in Kuwait. He said it would help improve both internal and eternal services.

After the speeches, the Amir pressed a button to make the first telephone call through the new centre.

Then guests were shown a television programme about the new equipment.

Teleprinters marked the opening in their own way.

Before leaving, the Amir was taken on an extensive tour of the new facilities.

Among the exhibits--a model of the whole centre.

And a large map shows how the centre coordinates telecommunications in Kuwait.

Finally, the Amir led other guests in signing the centre's visitors book.
