Background: THE SPANISH MINISTER FOR INFORMATION AND TOURISM, SENOR MANUEL FRAGA IRIBARNE SAID TODAY (SATURDAY) THAT THE RECENT SPANISH MEASURES ON THE FRONTIER WITH GIBRALTAR WERE MEANT ONLY TO DEAL WITH "SMUGGLING." HOWEVER AT THE CROSSING POSTS THE DETAILED SEARCHES HAVE BROUGHT QUEUES WHERE BEFORE THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC WAS BARELY INTERRUPTED WITH FRONTIER FORMALITIES.

THE BRITISH AND OTHER NATIONALS WHO LIVED IN SPAIN AND CROSSED THE FRONTIER DAILY TO WORK IN GIBRALTAR ARE NOW LIVING IN A TRANSIT CAMP IN THE BRITISH COLONY, BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO RESIDENCE PERMITS TO REMAIN IN SPAIN.

AT THE BORDER MANY OF THE LORRIES ARRIVING FROM SPAIN ARE CARRYING THE HOUSEHOLD GOODS AND FURNITURE OF FAMILIES WHO HAD MADE THEIR HOMES IN SPAIN. NOW THEY WILL STAY IN THE TRANSIT CAMPS UNTIL HOMES ARE FOUND IN GIBRALTAR.

IN THE COLONY THERE IS LITTLE ACTIVITY IN THE BUSINESS SECTION. THERE ARE NO TOURISTS, SO THE HOTELS ARE EMPTY AND TAXIS STAND IDLE IN THE STREETS. MANY RESIDENTS USED TO SPEND WEEKENDS IN SPAIN -- NOW FEW HAVE BEEN PREPARED TO FACE THE FRONTIER DELAYS...

MEANWHILE FOOD SUPPLIES ARE BEING BROUGHT TO THE COLONY BY SHIP FROM MOROCCO. THE FIRST CONSIGNMENT OF 24,000 EGGS ARRIVED FROM TANGIER IN TIME FOR THE WEEKEND MARKETS. OTHER FOOD BEING BROUGHT IN FROM NORTH AFRICA INCLUDES FRUIT, VEGETABLES AND TINNED GOODS.
