  • Description

THE SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF AT MAMPONG-AKWAPIM, ABOUT 30 MILES NORTH OF THE GHANIAN CAPITAL, ACCRA, RAISED NEARLY GBP500(STERLING) AT A HARVEST FESTIVAL IN AID OF THE SCHOOL'S BUILDING FUND.

ON SALE AT THE FESTIVAL WERE FRUIT AND FARM CROPS, MANY OF WHICH CAME FROM THE SCHOOL'S FARMS.

THE SCHOOL WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1959 IN A CLASSROOM AT A PRESBYTERIAN SCHOOL AT CHRISTIANBORG, ACCRA, BY AN AMERICAN VOLUNTARY WORKER, MR ANDREW FORSTER, HIMSELF TOTALLY DEAF. ITS STUDENTS WERE 13 DEAF CHILDREN AND 11 ADULTS.

IN 1962, THE SCHOOL MOVED TO MAMPONG-AKWAPIM AND WAS TAKEN OVER BY THE GHANANIAN GOVERNMENT. MR FORSTER STAYED ON AS ITS HEADMASTER.

TODAY, THE SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF HAS 162 STUDENTS WITH 750 ON THE WAITING LIST. CLASSES RANGE FROM PREPARATORY LEVEL TO MIDDLE FORMS. THIS YEAR NINE STUDENTS WILL SIT FOR THE MIDDLE SCHOOL LEAVING CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION.

THE HARVEST FESTIVAL WAS ORGANISED BY THE SCHOOL WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF SCHOOL WELFARE AND THE CHRISTIAN COUNCIL OF GHANA.
