  • Description

The Peruvian Prime Minister Jorge Fernandez Maldonado, resigned on Friday (16 July) only a we??? after he helped to put down a right-wing army revolt. Following the??? resignation, Peru's President, Francisco Morales Bermudez, brought a five new ministers into his cabinet. The swearing-in took place on Saturday (17 July).

SYNOPSIS: The restructuring of the 18-man Peruvian cabinet effectively ended a power struggle within the government which has been simmering ever since President Morales seized power in August 1975. He replaced General Velasco Alvarado after an internal coup within the armed forces. President Morales named General Guillermo Arbulu Galliani as the new Premier, War Minister and Army Commander. He is considered in Peru to be a moderate. This is in contrast to his predecessor who was labelled by some members of the armed forces as an authoritarian left-wing general.

One of those who has kept his position in the cabinet reshuffle was the Minister of Economy and Finance, Dr. Luis Barua Castaneda. However, the Minister of Foreign Relations has been replaced and is now Senor Jose de la Puente. He is one of only two civilians in the cabinet.

Other ministers were also sworn in during the ceremony. Reuters - quoting well informed sources - said strains within the former cabinet apparently led to the revolt earlier this month at an army training base. The base commander, Carlos Bobbio Centurion, refused to accept an order relieving him of his post from the former Prime Minister. The commander barricaded himself inside the base but later surrendered. The position of General Fernandez, the former Premier, seemed strengthened by the action until his surprise resignation.
