SYNOPSIS: What to say about the man?
That he is a millionaire businessman, publisher of a leading business magazine --- and he collects windup toy boats
That he owns homes in four states and five countries and plans to spend the week New Years inside an eight foot capsule slung under helium-filled balloons crossing the Atlantic Ocean ...an adventure noone has ever survived.

Malcolm Forbes does not pretend to be the aloof, grey-pin-striped businessman----not when he could be playing with???
He got into motorcycles just two years ago. And characteristically, he went big.

So he bought a motorcycle dealership which, today, he says, is the largest int he country.

It is the way he does things. Several nears ago, he bought a painting for his wife. And they bought another. And another. Today what used to be a huge bomb shelter beneath their home is an art museum --- their own.

With the purchase, a few years ago, of a jeweled work by the famous Peter Carl Faberge, Jeweler to the C???ars Forbes began what has now become the largest collection of valuable Faberge pieces outside. The Kremlin.

And then there's the collection of windup toy boats, which may be the largest collection of that kind in the country. Resting, most of them, on shelves in Malcel??? Forbes bathroom.

??? family to ??? they do out share his indul??? encase, tolerate them. With them, he is the appropriately doing grandfather. Who just happens, at the moment, to be hung up on balloons.

It was about a year ago he took up ballooning.

Remember the stories, Malcolm Forbes, eccentric millionaire becoming the first person ever to cross the entire country by hot air balloon. The magazine paid for it, but he is the sole owner of the magazine. No stockholders to report to. So Forbes Magazine established the -- quote--balloon ascension division.

Someone quipped, "I only know two outfits in the world with ascension divisions: The Holy church and Forbes Magazine.

Malcolm Forbes has trouble distinguishing between work and play. He makes his hobbies into businesses. And his business a twelve-hour-a-day lark. Arriving before dawn at the office in New York City. Three of his sons coming with him. They work at the magazine too. No pretense. They will inherit it.

And so before daylight has come, malcolm Forbes is at work.

Surrounded by reminders of play. Oh, yes, this is the latest adventure. On a balloon rig like this, Malcolm Forbes will rise over New Years eve to attempt a balloon crossing of the Atlantic which has never been done before.

It's a family feeling place, the magazine. Employees work out in the Forbes Magazine Fitness Centre, not on their own time. but on his. Reason:
    He is the consummate businessman.

His father, from whom he inherited the magazine and the basis of wealth, told him, the purpose of business is not pile up millions but to increase happiness. He says, "I've probably taken him more literally than he intended."
So Malcolm Forbes enjoys, having in his corporate board room a quotation form Chairman Mao. And on the wall a picture of his airplane which he calls "Capitalist Tool."
And of the ranch in colorado, the place in Tangier, the chateau in France, the island in Fiji, the town house in London. A Very acquisitive man, but as one of his sons says,
When he flies in the Capitalist Tool these days, he realizes that next time he crosses these skies it won't be in a jet plane, but hanging form balloons in a million dollar indulgence in adventure.

Back in the office, its walls hung with Gaugiun, Renoir, Gainesborough and a glorious Rubens, there is Malcolm Forbes handing out Christmas bonuses. Increasing happiness. Not many companies do this anymore. He does it personally.

Employees thank him, wish him, good luck on your trip, Mr. Forbes, and, we hoe you'll still be here next year to do this again.
