Background: HOLLAND HAS CLAIMED ANOTHER VICTORY OVER THE SEA WITH THE CLOSURE YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) OF AN EIGHT-MILE (13 KMS) LONG MODERN DYKE THAT WILL MAKE MORE THAN 22,500 ACRES (9,100 HECTARES) OF LAND AVAILABLE FOR USE. THE CLOSURE, WHICH CUTS OFF LAUWERS SEA, ON THE NORTH COAST, WAS WATCHED BY QUEEN JULIANA OF THE NETHERLANDS AND A BIG CROWD ABOARD A FLEET OF BEFLAGGED SHIPS.

THE NEW DYKE WAS COMPLETED WITH THE POSITIONING OF THE LAST OF 25 GIANT CONCRETE CAISSONS WHICH WILL HOLD BACK THE SEA.

THE TRADITIONAL DUTCH METHOD OF BUILDING DYKES FROM BLOCKS OF BASALT, RUSH MATTING AND SANDBAGS HAS GIVEN WAY TO THE USE OF THE SPECIAL CAISSONS, WHICH CAN BE PLACED IN SELECTED POSITIONS.

BUILT IN FLOATING DOCKS, THEY ARE TOWED TO THE SITE AND SUNK, AFTERWARDS BEING FILLED WITH SAND.

THE CLOSURE OF THE LAUWERS SEA IS ANOTHER MAJOR ACHIEVEMENT FOR DUTCH HYDRAULIC ENGINEERS - THEIR BIGGEST SINCE THE CLOSING OF THE ZUYDER SEA IN 1932.

THE NEWLY GAINED LAND WILL BE DRAINED AND USED FOR FISHING, RECREATION AND A MILITARY TRAINING GROUND, WITH SOME AREAS SET ASIDE FOR FRESH WATER RESERVOIRS AND WATER SPORTS.

THE PROJECT, WHICH HAS TAKEN NINE YEARS, COST 150-MILLION GUILDERS (GBP17-MILLION STERLING).

AFTER THE CLOSURE CEREMONY, QUEEN JULIANA VISITED THE TINY FISHING VILLAGE OF ZOUTKAMP, WHERE SHE SAW VARIOUS ACTIVITIES OF THE FISHERMEN.
