  • Description

The Viet Cong continues its lightning raids inside the city of Phnom Penh, striking where least expected but, according to both Western and Communist diplomatic sources, it is believed there is no intention of trying to take the capital.

On Sunday (January 24) afternoon an explosion rocked what was until then a peaceful day. A building of the Phnom Penh Electric Company controlling the city's electrical supply was shattered by charges placed by the Viet Cong.

Six people were injured in the blast, but power supplies were not affected. The building is only 20 yards (metres) from the Phnom or Sacred Pagoda on a small hill beside the Mekong River.

On the previous Friday (January 22) the city's Pochentong Airport was devastated by Viet Cong saboteurs who virtually wiped out Cambodia's small Air Force.

Following the bomb attack on the electricity plant fresh attacks were launched by the viet Cong on the Airport during the same night. Mortars and anti-tank rockets were punched in to the already shattered international airport, which is five miles (eight kms) from the centre of the capital.

Other snatch raids took place inside the city boundaries during the night, but no serious damage was reported. A number of explosions heard during the night were reported to be grenades thrown into the rives on which the city stands to protect bridges against possible frogmen attacks. This was one form of defence with which Phnom Penh retaliated.

Elsewhere sandbag blast walls and fortifications are springing up, and barbed-wire barricades are being thrown around public buildings, including that of Khamer Akas, the Cambodian Airline.

The city is now under heavy curfew. All is calm and under control, according to official spokesmen.
