    TAAL VOLCANO NEAR MANILA IS EJECTING STEAM, RED-NOT ROCKS AND MUD UP TO 200 FEET IN THE AIR ABOUT ONCE A MINUTE.

    THE VOLCANO, WHICH LIES IN THE MIDDLE OF TAAL LAKE, SOME 45 MILES SOUTH OF MANILA, KILLED 200 PEOPLE WHEN IT ERUPTED IN 1965 AFTER REMAINING INACTIVE FOR 54 YEARS. IT ERUPTED AGAIN IN 1966 AND 1967 BUT THERE WERE NO REPORTED CASUALTIES.

    THE TINY ISLAND VOLCANO WAS CLEARED OF ITS INHABITANTS WHEN IT STARTED SHOWING SIGNS OF ACTIVITY IN 1966 AND THE ONLY PEOPLE ON IT NOW ARE VOLCANOLOGY TEAMS.

    THE VOLCANO'S MOST VIOLENT ERUPTION WAS IN 1911 WHEN AN ESTIMATED 1,300 PEOPLE WERE KILLED.
