AMONG THEM WERE KENYANS KEINO, ???PRUGUT, TEMU AND KORGO; THE NORWEGIANS THOR ELLAND AND HAROLD LORENTZEN; SWEDES BENGUIST AND ???AKESON; FINNS NAVALA AND SAKARI ORKAMO; AND MAY OTHER CHAMPIONS FROM THE CAMEROUN, DAHONEY, GHANA, MALI, CHAD, TOGO, AND THE IVORY COAST. STAR OF THE GAMES WAS TO MANY MINDS KENYA'S KIPCHOGE KEINO, THE WORLD 3,000 METRES RECORD-HOLDER. IN THE 5000 METRES ON SATURDAY (LAST OF THE RACES SEEN ON FILM) KEINO WON BY MORE THAN A MINUTE, WITH A TIME OF 14 MINUTES 4.7 SECONDS. SECOND WAS ADE (CAMEROUN) IN 15 MINUTES 4.8 SECONDS, AND THIRD BERGUIST OF SWEDEN IN 15 MINUTES 4.9 SECONDS.

IVORY COAST PROVED SUCCESSFUL TOO IN THE WOMEN'S 800 METRES. THE RACE HAD A TOUCH OF NOVELTY, FOR IVORY'S TWO SISTERS, AISSA AND AWA CHERIF, FOUND THEMSELVES RUNNING AGAINST EACH OTHER. THEY CAME THROUGH WITH FLYING COLOURS - AISSA JUST BEATING SISTER AWA INTO SECOND PLACE. THIRD WAS GHANA'S BENEDICTA TNEGEY. IVORY CAPTURED THE WOMEN'S 100 METRES TOO - FIRST TITRO, SECOND MISSEKRA, AND THIRD FONS OF THE CAMEROONS.

BUT EUROPE GOT A LOOK IN TOO. WINNER OF THE MEN'S 800 METRES WAS BONDIA OF SPAIN, CHASING KENYA'S KIPRUGUT INTO SECOND PLACE. THIRD WAS IVORY'S ADJUMA DENOS. OTHER RECORDS BROKEN - THE AFRICAN DISCUSS CAPTURED BY IVORY'S SEGUI WITH A THROW OF 188 FT 2 1/2 INS (57.36 M). THE PREVIOUS RECORD WAS SET BE NYARE OF MALI.
