    PROTESTANT CHURCH OFFICIALS IN JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI, TURNED AWAY SEVENTEEN NEGROES FROM FOUR ALL-WHITE CHURCHES ON SUNDAY.TWO CLERGYMEN - THE MINISTER AND ASSISTANT PASTOR OF JACKSON'S LARGEST METHODIST CHURCH - SAID THEY WOULD ASK FOR NEW ASSIGNMENTS IN PROTEST AGAINST THE SEGREGATION.MEANWHILE, FIVE OTHER NEGROES WENT TO MASS AT ST.PETER'S ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH...WHERE NEGROES HAVE ATTENDED REGULARLY FOR YEARS.

    CHURCH LEADERS TURNED NEGROES AWAY AT GALLOWAY METHODIST, CAPITAL METHODIST, CALVARY BAPTIST AND FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH.MISSISSIPPI'S SEGREGATIONIST GOVERNOR, ROSS BARNETT, WHO GOES TO THE FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH, WAS GETTING OUT OF HIS CAR WHEN NEGROES TRIED TO ENTER.

    THE REV.W.B.SELAH, OF GALLOWAY MEMORIAL METHODIST CHURCH, SAID: "I KNOW IN CONSCIENCE THERE CAN BE NO COLOUR BAR IN A CHRISTIAN CHURCH.SO I WILL ASK THE BISHOP FOR ANOTHER APPOINTMENT." THE REV.JERRY FURR, ASSISTANT PASTOR, SAID: "I COULD NOT WILLINGLY SERVE A CHURCH THAT TURNS ANY PEOPLE AWAY."
    A TOTAL OF 664 PERSONS HAD BEEN ARRESTED IN JACKSON SINCE ANTI-SEGREGATION DEMONSTRATIONS ERUPTED TWO WEEKS AGO.
