  • Description

Police in Australia still have no idea how many people died on Sunday (January 5) when a heavily laden merchant ship smashed into the one mile long (1.6 km) Tasman bridge just outside Hobart. So far the only known dead are five of the 42 members of the crew of the freighter, the 7,200 ton bulk ore carrier Lake Illawarra. Two other crew members or cars which fell 120 feet (40 metres) into the swift flowing Derwent River were presumed to have died.

The freighter sank soon after it was engulfed by hundreds of tons of concrete and steel from the collapsing bridge.

Luckily the accident happened late on Sunday night when there is little traffic over the bridge. It's thought that up to six cars may have plunged into the chasm caused by the collapsing bridge.

As frogmen made repeated dives into the river to search for victims, hundreds of rescue workers pulled debris ashore from the broken ship.
