ONE OF THE MAIN PROJECTS TO BE STUDIED AT THE NEW RESEARCH CENTRE IS THE POSSIBILITY OF EXTRACTING URANIUM FROM TUNISIA'S RICH PHOSPHATE DEPOSITS. IT HAS BEEN ESTIMATED THAT APPROXIMATELY 450,000 TONS OF URANIUM CAN BE OBTAINED FROM 3,000,000,000,000 (THREE BILLION) TONS OF TUNISIAN PHOSPHATE.

SIMILAR STUDIES WILL BE MADE IN RESPECT OF A RECENTLY DISCOVERED TUNISIAN MINERAL WHICH MAY YIELD 1,000-1,500 GRAMMES OF URANIUM PER TON.

OTHER FIELDS OF RESEARCH AT THE TUNIS NUCLEAR CENTRE WILL INCLUDE THE DE-SALINATION OF SEA WATER AND THE HARNESSING OF SOLAR ENERGY FOR USE IN INDUSTRY.

PRESIDENT BOURGUIBA PERFORMED AN OFFICIAL OPENING CEREMONY AND THEN TOURED THE VARIOUS DEPARTMENTS OF THE CENTRE, TALKING TO SCIENTISTS AND TECHNICIANS.
