  • Description

Tokyo - city of 8,000,000 inhabitants - is accustomed to fire. In the long history of the Japanese capital, fire and earthquake have been the cause of many disasters.

Now the "La Scala" cinema has been almost totally destroyed by another big outbreak. Situated in the new quarters of the city, the big, solidly built cinema was soon ablaze and firemen could only confine the fire to the main building.

Inside, firemen moved among the smoking seats and fought their way through to the projection box with was almost totally destroyed. Thousands of gallons of water had been pumped into the building and news correspondents had to paddle their way through inches of water which gushed down the foyer steps.

Outside, police had a busy time controlling the huge crowds of onlookers and keeping the way clear for the many fire engines that had hurried to the scene.
