Background: Now that the report of the Tullock Commission on the need for firemen on the diesel driven trains of the Canadian Pacific Railway have been published and implemented by the Canadian Pacific Railway, the firemen declared redundant by the report have come out on strike, and many CPR trains are brought to a standstill.

CPR maintains that firemen are unnecessary on Diesel trains, but the powerful firemen's Union says their men are also 'safety men' and charges the CPR with putting the dollar before safety.

Throughout Canada such trains as are running are dependent on emergency crews, for the strike is not unanimously backed, but meetings are being held by the 22 other unions interested and the possibility of a Universal shut down must not be overlooked.

So far only 75 firemen have been laid off as redundant, be the CPR has promised that almost all will be given other jobs.

In Toronto both passenger and freight trains are moving. According to one picketer five union members crossed the line, but the CPR deck declines to say how many reported for work. Only three of the passenger trains scheduled out left without trouble. And six hours after the strike began fifty freight trains were in operation in the western region. In Winnipeg, two hundred firemen manned the picket lines, which were crossed by a number of workmen including twenty engineers. Three freight trains left Winnipeg manned by an engineer (driver) and a head-in trainmen (guard). But the Union has claimed that its efforts are hindering operations and will grow in intensity.
