  • Description

Anticipating Soviet Premier Khrushchev's impending State visit of France, Mar 15-29, President de Gaulle has sent some 800 political refugees on a compulsory holiday to Corsica and other islands as a precaution against a possible assassination attempt - some 30 of these arrived at the Ile de Re, off La Rochelle, Mar 8.

Excellent hotel accommodation and food are provided for the 30 political refugees during their stay at the Ile de Re, which will perhaps recompense for their inconvenience to some extent.

Bulk of the 800 have been sent to Corsica, while 25 are on Belle Ile, off the Brittany coast.

Most of the refugees are Russians, Georgians and central Europeans, but other anti-Communists rounded up include Spaniards and Chinese.
