    Ministers from eleven African nations met in Dakar, capital of Senegal of Monday (3 February) for long-term discussions on the effects of drought on their countries.

    The conference was held under the auspices of UNESCO and included presentative from the host nation, Senegal, as well as Mali, Chad, Cameroun, Upper Volta, Sudan, Niger, Ethiopia, Mauritania, Nigeria and Gambia.

    The agenda included talks on future African development plans, but was mainly concerned with the severe economic and material damage done to the lives of many of the nations present, by the recent drought in the Sahelian desert area.

    The conference was opened on Monday by an address from M.Adrien Senghor, Senegalese Minister of Rural Development, who welcomed the delegates from fellow African nations and warned them of the need to co-operate in the fight against natural disaster.
