INTRODUCTION It took just five minutes for Mexico's favourite boxer, Jose 'Pipino' Cuevas to retain his World Boxing Association welterweight title in Mexico City on Saturday (March 13). His fight against Argentine Miguel Angel Campanino ended when the referee stopped the fight in the second round.

SYNOPSIS: Before the fight began, the local Mexican crowds had made Cuevas clear favourite to win the fight on which his world crown rested.

Cuevas, who won the title last July from Angel Espada of Puerto Rico, is still only nineteen years old. His challenger Miguel Angel Campanino (wearing the light shorts) was by far the more experienced man. But, from the start of the first round, it was the young Cuevas who did all the attacking. Even so, there was no hint of the dramatic action to come.

Round Two...and it was little more than a minute into the round, when Cuevas brought out his most devastating punch, which sent the Argentinian challenger to the floor.

Cuevas powerful left hook did the damage. Campanino managed to get to his feet and stagger to the ropes, but he was clearly in no fit state to carry on with the fight.

After 123 seconds of the second round, the referee stopped the fight and declared champion Pipino Cuevas the winner...and still world champion.
