  • Description

COLOURED SINGER JOSEPHINE BAKER, ORDERED TO LEAVE THE 500-YEAR-OLD CHATEAU IN BERGERAC, FRANCE, WHERE SHE PROVIDES A HOME OF 12 ADOPTED ORPHAN CHILDREN, YESTERDAY WON A REPRIEVE. SHE HAS BEEN ORDERED TO LEAVE THE CHATEAU NEXT TUESDAY, BUT A COURT AT BERGERAC SUSPENDED THE ORDER UNTIL DECEMBER 1.

THE CHATEAU "LES MILANDES" HAS BEEN SOLD AT THE DEMAND OF MISS BAKER'S CREDITORS AND THE EVICTION ORDER WOULD HAVE MEANT FINDING A NEW HOME FOR HER "RAINBOW TRIBE" OF CHILDREN FROM MANY DIFFERENT COUNTRIES.

ALTHOUGH THE COURT ORDER HAS BEEN STAYED UNTIL DECEMBER 1, FRENCH LAW PROVIDES THAT NOBODY CAN BE EVICTED DURING THE PERIOD FROM OCTOBER 15 TO MARCH 15, WHICH MEANS THAT MISS BAKER WILL NOW HAVE UNTIL NEXT SPRING TO FIND NEW PREMISES FOR HER UNIQUE FAMILY.
