    UPPER VOLTA, THE FORMER FRENCH COLONY, CARVED OUT OF UPPER SENEGAL AND NIGER, ON TUESDAY CELEBRATED THE FIFTH ANNIVERSARY OF ITS INDEPENDENCE FROM FRANCE. PRESIDENT SANGOULE LAMIZANA TOOK THE SALUTE AT THE CELEBRATIONS.

    A NUMBER OF SOLDIERS AND CIVILIANS RECEIVED DECORATIONS FROM THE PRESIDENT AND FROM INTERIOR MINISTER DAOUDA TRAORE DURING THE CELEBRATIONS, HELD IN THE CAPITAL, OUAGADOUGOU, TO MARK THIS ANNIVERSARY.

    PRESIDENT LAMIZANA, WHO IS 53, HAS HELD OFFICE SINCE 1966, WHEN, AS A LIEUTENANT-COLONEL AND ARMY CHIEF OF STATE, HE DEPOSED THE COUNTRY'S FIRST PRESIDENT, MAURICE YAMEOGO, AND DECLARED HIMSELF HEAD OF STATE. HE SUSPENDED THE CONSTITUTION, AND IN, 1967 EXTENDED HIS MANDATE FOR A FURTHER FOUR YEARS TO "TRY AND OVERCOME THE COUNTRY'S ECONOMIC ILL."
