  • Description

A port side engine of an American Airlines DCIO burst into flames after the 'plane had screeched to a halt during take-off at Kennedy Airport on Monday (25 August).

Two hundred and sixteen passengers and 13 crew were evacuated as emergency crews poured foam onto the flaming jet engine. Although the fire was quickly extinguished, many people complained their legs were burned as they slid down escape chutes. Some landed in pools of foam.

Fifteen injuries were reported -- the worst was a broken foot.

Two tyre punctures were said to have sent the 'plane skidding off the runway into marshland adjoining the airport. The pilot said later he saw a cloud of smoke pouring from the left hand side of his 'plane. He added he wasn't sure whether the aircraft's engine was on fire.

The 'plane had commenced take-off for a scheduled non-stop flight to San Francisco.
