    A SPORT STADIUM IS CURRENTLY BEING CONSTRUCTED IN BRAZZAVILLE, CAPITAL OF THE REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO -- THE FORMER FRENCH CONGO. THE STADIUM, WHICH WILL CATER FOR ALL SPORTS, IS BEING PREPARED FOR NEXT YEAR'S ALL-AFRICA GAMES.

    THE GAMES OPEN ON THE 18TH OF JULY AND ALREADY 30 COUNTRIES HAVE ANNOUNCED THEIR PARTICIPATION. REPLIES HAVE NOT YET BEEN RECEIVED FROM LIBYA, THE SUDAN, SOMALIA OR BURUNDI; INVITATIONS HAVE BEEN REFUSED BY NORTHERN RHODESIA, RUANDA AND ETHIOPIA.

    BEING CONSTRUCTED AT A COST OF 900 MILLION C.F.A. FRANCS (ABOUT GBP1,319,650), THE STADIUM WILL BE EQUIPPED WITH AN OLYMPIC 50 METRE SWIMMING POOL, AS WELL AS ALL THE USUAL TRACK AND FIELD FACILITIES.

    WORK STARTED ON THE STADIUM IN JANUARY THIS YEAR. THE FIRST JOB WAS TO CLEAR THE GROUND IN THE DENSE MAYA-MAYA FOREST JUST OUTSIDE BRAZZAVILLE. NOW 500 WORKMEN ARE EMPLOYED ON THE ACTUAL CONSTRUCTION.
