Only two of the quintuplets born last Wednesday (October 2) by Mme Camille Christofle of Toulon are still alive. But these pictures, taken in the Foch hospital, show three of the tiny babies, one day after their birth.
The birth of the quins, in this sunlit setting of the cote d'azure, captured the imagination of the whole of France and displaced the gloomy news of French Ministerial crises. But the jubilation was short lived, for two of the quins died shortly after their birth.
When these scenes were shot, doctors and nurses were fighting for the lives of the remaining three, with the aid of the latest type incubators. But another one died.
The survivors were the smallest of the original five - a boy and a girl, each weighing less than 2lbs.
